White Label. Private Label. Wholesale. What is the Difference When Buying Products for Your Dog Business?
White label nose, paw and skin balms for dog with your branding?
If you’re looking for white label or private label dog balms, such as nose balm, paw balm, or soothing skin salves, you’re in the right place. Maybe you own a pet shop, a dog friendly cottage, are a dog groomer or would like to start selling on Amazon - whatever your current area of expertise, making products probably is not in your skillset. The good news is it doesn't have to be. Outsourcing is the key to growing your business and is easier than you think.
First let me talk about the differences between white label, private label, and wholesale, and why those terms matter for someone looking to grow their brand.
Wholesale - Buy 'As it Comes' and Sell
Wholesale is the simplest route. You buy the products in bulk with my branding on them and sell them from your shop, online store, or gift them to loyal clients.
- You’re not involved in formulation or production.
- No customisation and usually faster delivery.
- Great for stocking retail shelves quickly. Your customers may recognize the brand or feel confident to buy, given they can check out reviews on my website. You can see all my Soothing Salve Reviews at the bottom of this page as an example.
White Label My Expertise + Your Branding
This is the bread and butter of The Dog and I. I take one of my existing formulations, like the nose and paw balm or skin salve, and rebrand it. It will be exactly the same recipe I sell elsewhere, but with your logo and branding. You can also rename the product to make it unique to you. There is a small label design fee (usually £25 which is a one off fee, this will be more if it takes longer to approve a proof or if you want a different size tin but my printer/designer is very reasonable and I promise you won't be paying huge sums of money).
- Appears as your product, ready for your shelves or gift boxes.
- Compliance checks handled by me, you don’t need to worry.
- You can tweak packaging type and size (additional cost applies to cover the label redesign ), but the core formula stays the same.
White label is perfect if you want to increase your brand visibility, create consistency, and have your own range of products without diving into formulation and all the admin and compliance that making products involves.
Even though multiple businesses might be using the same product, the way it’s named, labelled, and presented makes it feel completely bespoke to your brand.
Private Label Created Just for You
If you need something truly bespoke, maybe a custom paw balm blend or a salve formulated with specific ingredients, private label is the way to go.
- I’ll develop a brand new product, unique to your business using your ideas and inspiration as a starting point.
- Larger intial order requirement, (to cover time spent on a new formulation.) Some admin costs for compliance. ie Obtaining Safety Data Sheets. This is less than £100 and you only need to do it once. Creating new label designs can be done using my existing ones as a base.
- Exclusivity. Only you sell that specific balm (unless agreed otherwise).
It’s a higher investment, but you get a product that is yours, a great match for standout brands or if you have a key ingredient in mind.

FAQs
Can I change the ingredients in a white label product?
Yes, but that moves you into private label territory. Once we change anything about the ingredients, even just adding a different essential oil, it becomes a new product. That means creating a new Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which has a cost associated but if you are after an unfragranced version or just a change of one of the base ingredients, ie switch rosehip oil for avocado oil that can be done with no cost. It is the essential oils which may trigger warnings on the label. But like most things in life, it’s doable! If you're planning to sell a decent volume, then the investment in a private label product can be well worth it in the long run.
How many units do I need to order?
For white label, the minimum order is 100 units of the 15g size or 50 units of the 60 g size. There are options to reduce the quantity slightly, but you'd need to pay for label setup in advance. You can find all this info and more in my wholesale catalogue - Request a copy here.
For private label, we’re usually looking at a minimum order of £500 worth of product unless it is a very simple tweak of an existing product. Depending on what you're after, the cost for the SDS may be included at cost price, with no extra markup. Label design starts at around £25 if it’s a variation of something I’ve already done, and goes up depending on complexity, but again, totally manageable.
Can I add my own scent or essential oil?
Yes! But that’s where some additional compliance work might come in. Scented products often fall under legislation that requires a new Safety Data Sheet. That said, if you opt for something unperfumed, it's super straightforward, there are usually no hazards involved, so it’s quick, easy, and cost effective.
I am not in the UK. Can you still help?
No. Unfortunately Brexit and subsequent changes have made that really tricky for small bsuinesses so I supply products to UK based businesses only.
Can I buy products from you unlabelled and add my own labels?
Yes this is no problem, you are responsible for ensuring they are compliant but the white label catalogue covers what is required and I will still cover all the admin and SDS aspects. If you have the ability to produce your own labels, this is a great option.
Real Life Example
Let’s take Doghouse, an award winning pet shop with a dog cafe and grooming salon.
They’ve built a loyal customer base who trust their curated product selection, and part of their charm is that many of their items carry their own branding.
Among their range are a beautifully presented Nose & Paw Balm and a Soothing Skin Balm as well as fabulous treats, dog food and a whole host of other dog related products. All carefully chosen and top quality. Their focus is on running an exceptional store, salon, and café, not formulating skincare. So instead of investing time, energy, and money into developing balm products in house, they’ve opted for outsourcing this task to The Dog and I.
This means they can stock high quality, ready made balms with their branding front and centre, no need to handle compliance, formulation, or production logistics. Their customers see trusted, professional products with the Dog House look and feel, which enhances their brand visibility and consistency across all parts of their business.
It’s a great way to grow brand identity without the overwhelm, and the result? Customers love the products, and Dog House gets all the credit, win-win.
Final Thoughts
Wholesale gets you going fast, white label gives you instant brand visibility with less work, and private label gives you full creative control and exclusivity. There’s no one size fits all approach, it depends on what works best for you and your business goals.
And remember, you don’t have to make your products from scratch to have a powerful, visible brand. I’m here to help you make it happen.
