How to Use Nose and Paw Balm - and Stop Your Dog from Licking It Off
How to Use Nose and Paw Balm Without Your Dog Licking It Off
If you’ve ever tried applying balm to your dog’s nose or paws, you will know it can sometimes feel like a bit of a mission, especially when they immediately try to lick it all off. Fortunately I have a few little tricks you can try that will help.
Start with clean, dry paws and noses
Before you apply any balm, do make sure the area is clean and dry. Just a quick wipe with a warm, damp cloth will do to help remove any dirt or and make it easier for the balm to soak in properly.
Warm it up in your hands
If your balm is a bit solid, you can rub a small amount between your fingers first to warm it up. It makes it easier to apply and helps it melt into the skin a bit better, so you don’t end up with a thick layer that your dog wants to lick off straight away.
Distraction is key
One of the easiest ways to stop your dog from licking the balm off is to distract them. This could be anything from giving them their dinner (especially if they’re slow eaters), handing them a chew, or letting them have a play with a toy or ball immediately after applying it. If they’re busy and focused on something else, it gives the balm a chance to soak in properly. You don't need a really thick layer - use it like you would a lip balm.
You can also try distracting them with a bit of grooming or doing a few tricks together – whatever your dog enjoys and whatever helps keep their mind (and tongue!) off the balm.
Take your time
When you’re applying the balm, take your time and rub it in gently. Hopefully, while you’re actually doing that, they won’t be too interested in licking it off straight away. It’s a nice moment to connect with your dog too, especially if they enjoy a bit of fuss.
Good timing makes a big difference
With paw balm especially, it’s often easier to do it in the evening when your dog is more relaxed. If your dog is happy with you touching their paws, give them a little foot rub while you’re doing it. Having a chew or a safe treat they can enjoy lying down can be a useful way to keep them occupied while the balm does its thing.
Try using socks (if your dog will tolerate them)
If you’re still struggling, you could try popping a little sock on each paw to help keep the balm on and stop them licking it off too soon. Just make sure your dog is happy with that and it doesn’t stress them out.
Apply before walks in hot or cold weather
You can apply a thin layer just before you head out for a walk. This can help protect paws from grit, salt, ice or even hot pavements. And they are much less likely to lick their paws when they are walking.
Choose a balm that’s safe to lick (just in case)
All nose and paw balms designed for dogs should be lick safe so if your dog does manage a sneaky lick, it’s usually nothing to worry about, about from the calories. I know it sounds obvious, but it’s worth checking the ingredients just to be sure. As a guide, ask yourself - are the ingredients things that you would be happy for your dogs to eat. I know some people recommend Vaseline for dogs, but it is petroleum jelly. Would you really want your dog eating that?

Make it a little ritual
Dogs love a bit of routine, so if you make balm time a regular thing, paired with some fuss or a tasty chew, your dog might start looking forward to it. And the more relaxed they are, the easier it becomes.
Every dog is different, so it may take a bit of trial and error to find what works best for yours. But hopefully these ideas give you a good starting point.
